Small Engine Repair Questions

Here are practical answers before you call, load up equipment, or decide whether something is worth fixing.

Questions before you call

Common Questions

If you do not see your question here, call Jay and ask.

Do I need to call before dropping off equipment?

Yes. Please call before dropping anything off. Jay is a one-person shop, and a quick call helps confirm whether the issue sounds like a good fit.

What types of equipment do you repair?

Countryside Small Engine Repair works on Lawn mowers, Riding mowers, Garden tractors, Snowblowers, Chainsaws, Weed trimmers, Leaf blowers, Tillers, Generators, Pressure washers, Log splitters, Go-karts and other small engine equipment.

Do you give estimates?

If the problem is not obvious, Jay can inspect the equipment and call before starting repairs. A diagnosis may involve time and disassembly, so ask how that will be handled when you call.

Do you offer pickup and delivery?

Most customers bring equipment in, but pickup and delivery may be available in some situations for an additional charge.

Do you work on older equipment?

Yes. Jay has 30+ years of small engine repair experience and is comfortable looking at older equipment.

How do I know if equipment is worth repairing?

Jay considers the equipment's age, overall condition, failed part, parts availability, likely repair cost, and replacement cost. Sometimes fixing it makes sense; sometimes replacing it is smarter.

Do you do seasonal maintenance and tune-ups?

Yes. Seasonal maintenance can include oil changes, spark plugs, air filters, carburetor cleaning, blade sharpening, pre-season tune-ups, and end-of-season maintenance.

What areas do you serve?

Countryside Small Engine Repair primarily serves Freeport, Pearl City, Lena, Orangeville, Dakota, Cedarville, German Valley, Stockton, Lake Carroll, Northwest Illinois and nearby Northwest Illinois communities.

How much does small engine repair cost?

It depends on the equipment and what failed. A spark plug or routine service is very different from carburetor work, an internal engine problem, or a riding mower drive issue. Jay will not invent a price before he knows what the machine needs.

How long will the repair take?

Timing depends on the season, current workload, diagnosis, and whether parts must be ordered. Call first and Jay will give you the most realistic answer he can based on the job and schedule.

What brands do you work on?

Jay works on many common brands, including equipment from John Deere, Toro, Honda, Craftsman, Cub Cadet, STIHL, and others. The model, condition, parts availability, and type of failure matter more than the logo alone. Countryside is an independent shop, not an authorized dealer.

Do you repair battery-powered or electric equipment?

The shop primarily focuses on gas-powered small engine equipment. Call before bringing battery or electric equipment because it may need a different repair source.

Do you do manufacturer warranty work?

Do not assume warranty work is covered. If the equipment is under a manufacturer warranty, call the manufacturer or an authorized dealer before authorizing independent repair.

What should I have ready when I call?

Know the type of equipment, brand and model if available, approximate age, how long it has been sitting, and exactly what happens when you try to start or use it.

Still unsure?

The easiest answer is usually a phone call.

Tell Jay what equipment you have and what it is doing. He will let you know whether it sounds like something he can help with.
